Are Premium Tyres Worth The Extra Cost?

Choosing the right tyres for your car is tricky enough before you start bringing budget into the equation. From tyre type and tread pattern to specialist tyre options with wet or dry handling features, there are plenty of factors to consider.

Budget and premium tyres sit at either end of the spectrum, as reflected by their differing prices. But which should you choose? If you’d like to know exactly what goes into making premium tyres more, well, premium, read on.

Why are premium tyres more expensive?

Firstly, let’s debunk a common myth around premium tyres: that they’re simply more expensive because of the brand. Oftentimes, drivers assume that premium manufacturers’ prices are higher simply because of the trusted brand name on the side of the tyre. However, there are plenty of reasons why premium brands like Continental and Goodyear are trusted in the first place.

Manufacturers like Michelin and Bridgestone invest a lot of time, money, and effort into research and development, perfecting the way their tyres behave and perform. Similarly, the materials that premium manufacturers use (namely, rubber compounds) have undergone rigorous testing, and are usually superior to budget alternatives.

When blending those factors together, premium tyres typically benefit from shorter braking distances, increased fuel efficiency, and longer lifespans when compared with their budget counterparts.

Are premium tyres worth it?

If you’re comfortable paying more up front, and rate safety, longevity, and overall driving performance highly, then, yes, premium tyres are definitely worth it.

Here’s why:

Safety & braking capabilities

Premium tyres typically have far superior braking capabilities on account of their advanced tread patterns and rubber compounds. Their grip and tread often make for much shorter braking distances than budget options in both wet and dry conditions.

In wet weather specifically, the tread designs on budget tyres may make them less effective at channelling water out of the path of the car, reducing traction and elongating stopping distances.

Continental compared the braking distances of their premium tyres against budget competitors, and found that their stopping distance with ABS on dry asphalt was 35.4m, while competitors came in at around the 47m mark.

Longevity

Premium tyres generally last much longer than budget options thanks to their specialised construction and slower rates of wear. Michelin, for example, have “performance made to last” as their slogan - a testament to their commitment to the longevity of their tyres.

A note on price: while many drivers are put off of premium tyres due to their higher price, it’s worth considering that they’ll last you longer than a budget tyre, possibly saving you money in the long run.

Fuel economy

Aside from their grip and traction, premium tyres also offer a lower rolling resistance. This is the energy a car must use to move itself forward across the surface of the road. The advanced tread compounds of premium tyres reduce unnecessary friction between the tyre and the road, requiring less energy (and, therefore, less fuel) to move the car.

Budget tyres typically have a much lower EU tyre labelling category (around F), while premium tyres like the Michelin e·Primacy sit around an A, indicating their efficiency.

The Michelin e·Primacy is one of the best examples of a tyre that gives you more miles to the gallon on account of its impressive rolling resistance. According to tests by the manufacturer, it saves drivers around 0.21 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, and around €80 across its lifespan.

Driving comfort (and tyre noise)

Due to their makeup, premium tyres also offer a host of other benefits, like better handling, a quieter sound, and a smoother ride.

Which tyres are right for you?

If you’ve got a limited budget, then budget tyres are the smart choice, especially when there are other vehicle expenses to keep on top of - like servicing and any ad hoc repairs.

However, if you can spare a little more up front, premium tyres come with a whole host of benefits and usually last much longer, making them well worth the initial investment.
